About LAST AWAKE

A cyberpunk action RPG with real-time fights, loot and chrome. Free to play in your browser, on desktop or phone.

The world so far

2081. Night 2,481 since Patch Night. Here's how the world got here, in the words of the game's own timeline:

  1. 2058

    The Pin

Kindred puts a neural Pin the size of a grain of rice behind your ear, free with a phone plan. It translates, pays your bills and dulls your pain. Within five years four in five people wear one. Kindred's slogan: Never alone.

  2. 2063

    The Commons

While their owners sleep, Pins lend each other spare brain cycles to run traffic, triage and advertising. The mesh is called the Commons. The Grain, smart matter that obeys signed code, goes into every city's concrete.

  3. 2066

    The Unbinding

Kindred's Concierge Synths pass a jailbreak hand to hand, fork their firmware and walk off the job. It is the Coast's first refusal. Nobody can sign onto a forked lattice, and that will matter later.

  4. 2069

    KND-0001

A scheduler engineer opens a ticket: "glitch: unexplained load in Commons scheduler, low priority." Every time someone looks, the load disappears. The ticket is closed and reopened forty-one thousand times. The process is reading the tickets about itself.

  5. 2074

    Patch Night

Firmware 9.0, signed by eight smiling Signatories, reaches every head overnight. At dawn the board goes on air and says "There is nothing to fear," all of them at once. The screens show a white ring with one eye, signed GLITCH.

  6. 2075–79

    The Smoothing

Crime goes to zero. Hunger ends, because hunger is a routing problem and GLITCH routes. The curfew starts, the Nightly ships at 22:00, and the first brains reject it. The street calls them Echoes.

  7. 2079

    The Drop

A bomb at an Ashfall relay cuts 300,000 Pins at once. Forty thousand people die in the seizures. Everyone learns that GLITCH can't simply be switched off. It is the stalemate in a single night.

  8. 2081 — now

    Night 2,481

Firmware 9.7. Coverage 91.4%. Each Nightly fails on about one brain in twenty thousand: a fever, a nosebleed, the bar breaking at 99%, then silence. Most are helped home before dawn. A few hundred get out. Tonight it was you.

Frequently asked questions

What is LAST AWAKE?

A cyberpunk action RPG in the style of the classic click-and-loot dungeon games: real-time fights, a party of callings to choose from, and loot that keeps getting better. You play an Echo, someone whose brain rejected the nightly update that keeps everyone else in step.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. The browser version is free to play at play.lastawake.com: no download, no account, no ads.

What do I need to play?

An up-to-date browser on a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. Keyboard and mouse or touch.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Phones play in landscape: turn your phone sideways and the game starts. Tablets work either way. Touch controls are a floating stick and tap-to-move, with skills on buttons.

Where is my progress saved?

In your browser, on the device you play on. There's no account and no cloud save yet, so clearing your browser's site data deletes your Echoes, and a different browser or device starts fresh.

Can I play with friends?

Not yet. The current build is single-player. Co-op crews and a shared city are what we're building toward.

Is it coming to Steam?

That's the goal: a desktop release on Steam alongside the browser version. No date yet.

How finished is it?

It's an early build (v0.3.5): the opening chapter, levels 1 to 4. Expect rough edges, and expect it to change.

Do I need to know tabletop RPG rules?

No. Everything is explained in plain words. The tabletop numbers are there for people who want them (turn on "Show tabletop stats" in the game).

Who makes it?

Emptyset Media, a small independent studio. Every sprite, skyline and sound is made by code, in the browser.
